Circuit breakers

Circuit breakers provide protection against overloads (thermal) and short circuits (magnetic). The thermal protection works by a bimetal being heated by increased current, which causes a break after a specific period of time. The magnetic protection is based on an electromagnet that trips during current spikes and short circuits. A tripped circuit breaker can be reset by moving the lever back to the upper position. Hydraulic magnetic circuit breakers do not have a thermal function and are therefore relatively insensitive to variations in ambient temperature. These can also be used as direct substitutes for switches.
